  5. will require great efforts to repair," San Diego Bishop Leo
  6. Maher wrote last week to Lucy Killea, 67, a Democrat running in
  7. a special election for California's state senate. He then
  8. applied a little used sanction that denies Communion to
  9. Catholics who "obstinately persist in manifest grave sin."
  10. Killea says she will abide by the decree but will not change her
  11. position. She is the first political candidate to receive this
  12. censure.

  14.     Catholics who take pro-choice stands have been particularly
  15. frustrating to the nation's bishops, who have been asked to
  16. respond decisively to dissenters. But a spokesman said it is
  17. highly unlikely that Maher's precedent would become national
  18. Catholic policy.
